A curved back that follows a bend in the river, so the people at either end face one another.

Chroy Lavi is named for Chroy Changvar, the peninsula where the Tonlé Sap runs into the Mekong. We were on that site for two years, and the shape of the water is the one drawing we kept returning to.

The back follows the bend of the river in plan. It is not a styling gesture: a straight sofa seats people in a row, all facing the same way, while a curved one turns them fractionally toward each other. At either end of Chroy Lavi you can hold a conversation across the whole piece without leaning forward.

The velvet is cotton, not synthetic, and it is the colour the river actually runs in the dry season — a warm clay that reads brown in shade and almost pink at the end of the day. The brass feet are left unlacquered, so they will go dark and uneven at their own pace.
